Critically Appreciate character of Mali in the novel “The Vendor of Sweet”.

Answer
Introduction:-
Grace introduced in the novel when Mali returns from America with her. He had just written a letter telling Jagan,
“Arriving home; another person with me.”
Jagan was again puzzled But When he saw the ‘Another person’ directly he was much more confused. Mali indicated the at his side and said,
This is grace. We are married”.
Thus from the being she is introduced as Mali‘s wife. Without any information about her. It is grace only who herself reveals everything to Jagan either by her talk or by her action.

1. Grace; Emerging as a Domestic and Caring Girl:-
The arrival of Grace had disturbed Jagan in the beginning but Grace’s adjusting nature make him happy. Since her arrival, she started taking care of the house. She started visiting Jagan’s quarters and tidied then up. The roll of mat was shaken and put away. His pillow of hard cotton patted. She washed the vessels in his kitchen and arranged them neatly on shelf. She used to sweep floor and when Jagan tried to stop her, she told him.
“Father, you thinking. I mind it? I don’t.
I must not forget that I’m an Indian daughter-in-law.”
She liked to work. For her it was a very lovely house. Now there was orderliness in their house. She always talked either Jagan very lovingly. She felt surprise when Jagan asked her about Mali’s education in America. She told Jagan that the letters written to him were composed by her. Her company had started giving comfort to Jagan. He had stared liking for her.

2. Her Past:-
Grace was a child of Korean mother and American father. Her father was a soldier. She was born in New York. Her father had died before her birth. She had studied at a girl’s School named Margaret’s. Then she had studied domestic science at Michigan. She had met Mali over there when he went there for his creative writing course. At first she was afraid to come to India as she knew about cast-system. She had feared the she would not be accepted. But Jagan accepted generally as there was no other way.

3. Her support to Mali fo getting money:-
One day Mali went to Jagan and called Grace by telling that he was discussing business. At that time Mali wanted fifty one thousand dollars from him to set up a factory for manufacturing novel writing machines in collaboration with his America associates. Mali convinced so many people from Malgudi were going to join in his “Schemes”. He said that Grace had come to India especially for this purpose.
Mali explains each and every detail about the story writing machine but For Jagan it was a risky business and fifty one thousand dollars was not small amount. Mali and Grace insisted a lot but the couldn’t change his decision. Finally one day Mali told Jagan that Grace had come there to work and she had no work so she was going to back. Thus Mali’s idea of sending grace back to America disturbed Jag a lots.
Thus she was there for the project to work with Mali. If she had nothing to do, She would go to back to America.

4 .A shocking secret Revealed by Grace:-
Through cousin Jagan had come to know that Grace had started spending his time with the girls at Dr. Kuruwilla’s house. When Jagan talked to Grace, he got the greeted shock of his life. The great secret of Mali was revealed by grace. She told Jagan,
“But we are not married. He promised he’d marry me
in the India way. But it did not happen.”
Jagan was shocked. He felt that both of them had tainted his ancestral house. For sometimes he barricaded himself in the one part of his house but finally decided to leave for retreat.

5. A good Girl :-
Thus Grace emerged as a good girl in the beinging. She supported Mali. She changed herself in Indian ways but she couldn’t get any result for it because Mali rejected her. But For Jagan she was a good girl. When Jagan went to his retreat, He promised cousin that he would arrange for the fare of air ticket whenever Grace wanted to go.

Conclusion:-
Thus all the way Grace turns a looser who lost everything her money, Mali and love of Jagan.
