          Knowledge in the 20^th century is multiplying at the breath-taking speed. Notes present big chunks of knowledge in a neat and succinct form. Notes help us many ways to us. It helps us to remember important detailed largely because they are presented in a tabular form. Notes refresh your memory about what we read sometime in the past, Note also useful to prepare for an examination, write an essay, participate in discussion, and give a lecture.

Hallmarks of Good Notes:-

Good notes should have the following characteristics.

Brevity:- The first and foremost important characteristic of good note is its brevity. Goodness are always brief.

Relevant Fact:- Second characteristic is relevant fact. A good note maker should always be careful that his task is to provide only the relevant facts.

Use of words or phrase:- Next important feature of good notes is use of words or phrases i.e. that is full sentences are not necessary so it is not expected that notes are in grammatically correct ore stylistically pleasing.

A logical Sequence:- Another characteristic good notes is consistency in a logically sequence. Information is presented in a logical sequence usually in a tabular form. It is divided and sub=divided using figures, letters and dashed. The division may be

Main sections-1,2,3 etc.

Sub-section-a,b,c etc.

sub-sub-sections, i, ii, iii etc.

or

main sections, 1,2,3, etc.

sub-sections:- 1.1., 1.2, 1.3, etc.

sub-sub sections-1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3, etc.

Use of Abbreviation and Symbols

          Good notes contained abbreviation and symbols, there are three kinds of abbreviation.

capitalized, initial letter for example WHO, UNESCO

The few letters (first few) of a word).An ‘s’ may be added to show plurality. e.g. know-s,

The first few and the last few letters of a word with sometime an apostrophe in between. E.g. w’out-without, wrt’g- writing.

          The common abbreviations that occur in news papers, timetables are given in dictionary in addition. Every individual uses his or her own self of abbreviation care should be taken that one abbreviation doesn’t stand for more than one word. There should be no ambiguity and the note maker after a few weeks, months or years should be able to understand the abbreviation and symbol used earlier. 

The standard symbols used are e.g.

i.e. that is, viz-namely, e.g. for example.

In good note, another common symbols are used as follows. –before, -therefore,  -because,    -or.

Developing Notes:-

          Notes are aids to memory brief while using them we have to develop them to make them intelligible to others.

Note Taking:-

          The difference between note-making and note taking is not much. By note making we mean notes are made form material read that is based on books, journals, and magazines. By note taking we mean notes taken down while listening to a speech or a lecture. This is not too difficult as most speakers usually repeat an important point although they used different words. It is not necessary that the exact word used by the speaker need not be reproduced in the notes but care should be taken not to distort the meaning of speaker.

          While making good notes following suggest should be followed. It is advisable to keep separate note books for each subject and number the pages of the note books. Few pages should left blank so that these can be used later on when additional information is available.
