Write a short note on Bernard Marx

Write a short note on Bernard Marx
Barnard Marx is one of the important characters in ‘Brave New World’. He is helpless victim of the social system. He lives under in the new world, and his efforts to raise a voice of revolt against this system end in smoke. Bernard has been placed in the category Alpha plus like Watson. He feels himself to be misfit in the world State.

Bernard is immediately made known to us a suspect character in very first introduction in Chapter 3. He works, we learn, in the psychology Bureau, and as a result, he knows too much about the mechanics of conditioning to be altogether at the mercy of his own. In any case, as an Alpha plus, he has more mental freedom than member of the lower grades.

In first gap in Bernard’s conditioning is soon revealed. He is seriously in love, and what is worse he is jealous. He loves Lenina a very ‘pneumatic’ and popular girl and turns pale fury when he hears Henry Foster generously recommending her charms to the assistant predestination. He feels that they are talking about hers as though she were a bit a meat and feels like hitting them. Obviously, the idea that promiscuity is desirable does not appeal to Bernard. He rejoices in his rage and refuses to take some to cheer himself up.

As well as suffering Jealous, Bernard suffers from shyness and is horribly embarrassed, when Lenina publicly accept his invitation to visit the save reservation with him. This is another trait which we can easily sympathize and which its criticism the brash practicality of Brave New Word”. Sexual manners Lenina’s treatment of him, healthy and virtuous as he has to admit it is, makes him wretched. He is therefore chronically self-conscious and envious of others more at home in their world. He has Infact a prickly and insecure personality. Here great friend Helmholtz, in most ways.

After this careful introduction, Bernard develops naturally and interestingly. Admirable he may not be, but he is quite comprehensible. We see him uncomfortably out of things at his group solidarity service, trying valiantly, but without conviction to experience the uplifting sense unity which his companions enjoy. Ever his relationship with Lenina brings him little comfort for she can understand his desire to go for lonely walk with and her. She can share either. His sentiment seems to her both mad and wicked. Her correctly conditioned life seems to him childish.

Barnard knows that his unconvention like and dislikes are disapproved of by the authorities. He is a dreadful moral coward and extremely afraid of the director, though the pretends not to be and indeed the Director’s indiscreet relation of his past makes Bernard feels sure he will not carry out his treat of dismissal. As a result he becomes cocksure and boastful to Helmholtz’s disgust. When the treat is carried out, Bernard is plunged into object despair.

Nevertheless, Bernard is no fool. He quickly realizes the usefulness to him of bringing John and Linda back to London, and arranges for permits with brisk efficiently. His success however at once begins to go to his head. As the savage’s bearleader, he is courted and felted by all upper caster and becomes completely swollen header and overweening. He even tries to gives instructions to the world controller and lays up much trouble for himself among those who seek his favours.

Bernard is certainly deteriorating badly. When Helmholtz offer him comfort after his failed part, he is resentful of his magnanimity and jealous of his friend. When real trouble breaks out with the riot in the hospital, he is seen in a very bad light, cowardly, indecisive and disloyal; if he could he would disown his friend. They when they are all arrested and interviewed by the controller, he can take no part in discussion, but loses all self control when he hears of his prospective banishment to an island luckily, we are not left with this as our final view of Bernard, he gives generous thanks to Helmholtz, and depart with dignity. Nevertheless, after we have seen of him, this must seem unlikely.

Bernard is a weak character, insecure, boastful, spiteful, jealous and cowardly. His objection to the new society is basically that he does not personally fit it. When this is temporarily remedies, he quickly becomes reconciled to the childishness’ and sexual behaviour; he still reserves the right to criticize. At the sometime, he is useful agent for conveying some of the satirical themes of the book. For his intelligence give him insight to pin point.
