Character of Sumitra
Revolutionary woman:-
Sumitra play an important part in the development of Vasudha’s personality. Vasudha’s acquaintance with Sumitra marks a turning point in her life. Sumitra is filled with revolutionary ideas. She wants to live life as she wishes. She hates to follow the old tradition blindly. She does not wish to marry also. A girl’s union with a man is ‘be’ all and end all of her life. She desires to marry a man who would be a friend and not a master. But she is not hopeful to get such a man. She has own self-reflect and she wants to keep it up. She decides to leave her parents’ hum only because he hates authority of any kind.
Her view on the dowry system:-
Sumitra never loses a change to fight for the rights of women. She becomes hot angry a boy’s parents demand a rich dowry from her, because they had spent lots of money for his education. Here she retorts that it is not the duty of her parents to repay for it. A girl too is brought up in the similar way. She says that the dowry system is a great social evil. A girl’s merits do not count at all.
Her view on today’s girls
But today’s, things are considerable changed. Many girls are more qualified than boy and they have a career of their own. So they are not economically dependent upon anyone. They share the financial responsibility of family. But a girl’s education and job have no value. She is treated as a commodity. Everyday in newspapers we read about murdered of newly wedded girls by her in ‘laws. Really it is blot on our society.
A Perfect Model for others:-
Sumitra feels that something effective should be done to remove this evil. We should raise the public opinion against it. Girls should take active part in this movement. In spite of their biological limitations, they can bring out their potential with the helps of courage and self-discipline. There is nothing which they can not achieve. Girls should reject boys who demand dowry. Sumitra is a model for others. She fearlessly takes an action with a purpose to enlighten other.
His fight against injustice
Then Sumitra leaves her house, goes to Vasudha for help and shelter. But Vasudha can not help her without Vyomesh’s permission. So she leaves Vasudha and goes to Animesh a pleasant young man. Then she comes to know that he is married and was deceiving her with soft world. She is shocked with surprise and decided to flight against injustice done to women.
A source of Inspiration to Vasudha:-
Ramya is Sumatra’s landlady. She dies of severe burns because she can not bring enough dowry to her husband. On the other hand, she can not force her parent to offer a rich dowry. Sumitra also learns that if a woman becomes a widow, her status goes down in the family.. The life of a widow is pitiable. Sumitra takes up all such problems of women as challenge to her and she works day and night to remove such evils from the society. Thus she is a source of inspiration to Vasudha and a beacon light to the distressed and tormented women of her society.
