Female Characters in “Seven Steps in the Sky”
Introduction:-
In our patriarchal society, women have secondary status. On account of lack of education and economic dependence, they are pushed into background both within and outside of the family these factors lead to their exploitation and denial of social justice and human rights. Both Karl Marx and Gandhiji opposed the rigid distinction between men’s’ and women’s roe from this point of view.
A woman’s place in the society is always assigned by man. He decided how she should behave as a daughter, wife and other. Aristotle rightly points out,
“The female is a female by virtues of a certain lack of qualities and this lack is always measured in terms of qualities possessed by man. “
“Seven Steps in the Sky” is not an account of Vasudha’s life only, but the assimilation of various problems faced by other women in her surrounding. Here Kapadia observes that “A woman ceases to be a hum being after marriage.”
What is feminism:-
The term ‘feminism’ means an ideology for making identical the female status in the male dominated society. According to Oxford English Dictionary, the tern feminism means “having the qualities of female”. But the meaning of the term has been gradually transformed and now it means a theory of political economic and social qualities of the exits. Thus in general feminism is the ideology of woman’s libration since intrigue in all this approaches. It is thus who recognizes herself and is recognized by other as feminist. As a physiology of life it seeks to discover and change the more subtle and deep seated cause of women’s’ oppression. As a philosophy of life it opposes woman’s subordination to man in the family and society.

Ranjana
Ranjana does not belong to a rich family. She serves her husband in all possible ways. She has the lowest status in the family, but she never complains. Her husband Deepak never co-operates her in any matter. He does not accompany her on Raksh Badhanan Day to her brother’s house. He takes it as below his dignity.
Leena
Like Ranjana Leena is also very unhappy at her husband’s house. She has to do all the household duties alone. No one is ready to help her. She expected to be modest and mate she should works as hard as possible and talk as little as possible she should be affectionate, cordial and hospitable to the guests.
Lalita:
Once Vasudha goes to Lalita’s house. She finds her in depression. Lolita always tries to appear happy and satisfied. She makes a mistake by telling her husband. Sudhir that before marriage, she had inters in a young boy of her college. Sudhir is highly suspicious and thinks that she has still relations with that boy. Such a woman has to suffer through her life.
Vadanti
Vadanti has the same such problems. Her husband Satish is a music critic. She wants to make progress in the same field. But Satish thinks that a woman’s greatest ambitious should be not have loving husband, children, a beautiful house and a new care. Vadanti does not want to live such a submissive life. She wishes to develop her talent and capacity.
Asha
Ranjan’s daughter, Asha has a different problem. She falls in love with a young man and becomes pregnant before marriage. She is easily cheated in such a tender age. Everyone hates her and considers her as a black spot on her family and the society. Her father had illicit relation with another woman. There is no future for her. So she commits suicide.
Faiba
Faiba has her own problems. She looks after Vyomesh as her own son. She sells off her ornaments for his progress and well-being. She always keeps in mind his likes and dislikes and odes everything to please him. But Vyomesh never values her warmth of heart and affection. Even her death does not deject him. How hard=hearted an individual he is!
Ana
Vipul feels extremely jealous of his wife, Ana because she becomes more popular and earns more money than he does. Men can never tolerate their wives dosing better and than themselves. Salina, a young and energetic orators, dislikes men who are selfish and exploiters.
