Character of Lolita:-
Introduction:-
Rabindranath Tagore is the supreme
master in the art of characterization, by his poetic genius. He has portrayed
his numberless character in his fiction. His great quality is that his
characters are quite symbolic, psychological and realistic. Nobody can surpass
him in the art of off character-portrayal. In this novel we have two contrasting
group of character brought together in sharp conflict. Gora and Krishna Dayal
belongs to the Orthodox Hindu group while Pare Babu his daughter,, Binoy and
Andandmoyi belong to the group of the Brahmo and how have a more liberal view
of religion.
Lolita –
A foil to Sucharita:-
Sucharita is the heroine of the novel
‘Gora’. However Lolita is regard as the most effective lady character in the
novel .If we compare Lolita with the elder sister, Sucharita, we find a lot of difference
between the two. Lolita is outspoken and lively, while Sucharita is too
serious, silent and calm. The most impressive quality in Lolita her frankness.
She never pretends anything Lolita is brave enough to rebel against the whole society.
She is full youth and vitality. She is intelligent also. She is always bubbling
with joy and vitality while Sucharita remain passive.
As a
Representative of the Modern Girl
Lolita represent the modern girl. She is
the representative of Bengali women ate the end of the 19th century.
She follows the Brahmo religion. She is courageous and tell everything bluntly
to anyone. She actively takes part in the activities of Brahmo society. She
mixes with men freely. Up to the middle of the novel, Lolita looks very smart,
fashionable, and intelligent.
Her views
on Binoy and Gora
Lolita is so courageous that she makes
fun of Gora, his country dress and his orthodox views. She likes Binoy, because
he is a good mannered person and gentle in nature. But this was the first
impression of Binoy on Lolita. Later on, she finds that he is completely under
the influence of his friend Gora. She compares Binoy wit a mosquito and Gora,
with Cockroach, which swallows the mosquito. At the end, she starts respecting
Gora as a more powerful and sincere man.
Her Intimacy
with Binoy:-
Lolita becomes more intimate with Binoy
during the rehearsal of the drama, which they were going to present at the
concert. She quarrels with Haran and flatly refuses to take part in concert.
Lolita is very confident. She leaves Mr. Brownlow’ place without informing
anybody. In the modern world, it may not mean much but in those days such a
thing was impossible for Bengali girls. She had not gone alone. Binoy
accompanies her on the steamer. She does not care for the criticism of the society,
because she believed in the equality of men and women.
Her
Boldness and Courage:-
The scandal about Lolita and Binoy’s
journey together does not affect her feelings for Binoy. When Binoy proposes
Lolita, she also boldly tells her father that she would be happy to marry
Binoy. There is a scene between her and Baroda, where her boldness and courage
are nicely presented. Poor Binoy goes away without any argument, when Baroda
orders, but Lolita faces her mother bravely. Even when Baroda refuses to accept
the marriage between Binoy and Lolita, she does not lose courage. She leaves
her house and goes to live with Anandmoyi.
Her care
for Sucharita:-
Lolita supports Sucharita. It is she,
who encourages Sucharita to accept the love of Gora. She thinks that Gora is a
good, noble and the fittest man for Sucharita. Sucharita was afraid of refusing
Haran, but Lolita helps her and says bluntly that Sucharita will never marry
him.
Conclusion:-
Thus
she is witty, lively, talkative, rash, bold, hone and careless about the
criticism of the society. She is attractive and lovable female character of the
novel
