Introduction:-
Rabindranath Tagore is the supreme
master in the art of characterization, by his poetic genius. He has portrayed
his numberless character in his fiction. His great quality is that his
characters are quite symbolic, psychological and realistic. Nobody can surpass
him in the art of off character-portrayal. In this novel we have two
contrasting group of character brought together in sharp conflict. Gora and
Krishna Dayal belongs to the Orthodox Hindu group while Pare Babu his
daughter,, Binoy and Andandmoyi belong to the group of the Brahmos and how have
a more liberal view of religion.
His physical Feature and Marriage:-
Anandmoyi had a slender but well knit body. And her
hair was grey. He was woman under forty. Here face was very soft. As if God had
given her most delicate face. Her face shows that she was a pure and
intelligent woman. Her complexion was dark quite in contrast to the color of
God. She used to wear a saree and a bodice. Anandmoyi’s husband was Krishna
Dayal Babu. Her marriage with Krishna Day was quite accidental. Krishna Day’s
first wife had died in childbirth when he was only twenty three years of age.
The child was a son whom Krishna Dayal had given his father –in-law. After the
death of the first wife with in six months Krishna Dayal had married Anandmoyi
who was daughter of a great Banaras Pandit.
As a noble and Unorthodox character:-
Anandmoyi is the most novel and high spirited
female character in the novel . She is very similar to Paresh Babu in temperament.
Of course she does not have a philosophical and saintly nature of Paresh Babu.
She is the representative of the best in Hinduism. Her character is fairly
simple. Her nobility lies in her thoughts and ideals in her life. She was the daughter
of an orthodox Pandit of Banaras, but she has nothing of orthodoxy in her life.
Anandmoyi believes that love and marriage are a matter of heart. She says that
love is more important than ‘Mantras’. She finds no difference between a Brahmo
and an orthodox Hindu.
Her Love for Gora:-
She was a childless women with a keen desire
for motherhood. She was in a dream that a child would be given to her by a
miracle and this made her accept Gora as her own child. She has the womanly
quality constant worry that Gora might be only day taken away from her if his
real origin is revealed she loves him as
her own child. She also love Binoy, Gera’s friend, like her own son.
As a Farsighted Woman:-
She is a farsighted woman who knows the
one day or the other Gora’s secret of
being a non-Hindu might be out. So she refuses to marry him to a Hindu girl in
spite of various offers. She is worried at Gora’s orthodox nature, mainly
because she is afraid that he would get a big shock on learning that he is not
a Hindu. Secondly his orthodox nature makes it difficult for him to marry a
non-Hindu girl. Anandmoyi finds Sucharita the Brahmo girl, a perfect match for
Gora. She thinks her to be a perfect wife for Gora.
Conclusion:- Anandmoyi as the symbol of India:-
The highest tribute to Anandmoyi is
paid by Gora in the Epilogue. There was a time when Gora disliked her liberal
attitude and refused to have a glass of water in her room. But at the end, he realizes
that Anandmoyi is the perfect symbol of motherhood and of the mother country,
India in her love, her broadmindedness and her spirit of service. In her, he
finds the true image of mother. Finally, he says.“Mother,
you are my mother. The mother for whom is been seaming all day was the item
sitting in my room at home. You have not caste; you make no distinctions and
have no hatred. It is you who are India.” .
