Introduction:-
Rabindranath Tagore is the supreme
master in the art of characterization, by his poetic genius. He has portrayed
his numberless character in his fiction. His great quality is that his
characters are quite symbolic, psychological and realistic. Nobody can surpass
him in the art of off character-portrayal. In this novel we have two
contrasting group of character brought together in sharp conflict. Gora and
Krishna Dayal belongs to the Orthodox Hindu group while Pare Babu his
daughter,, Binoy and Andandmoyi belong to the group of the Brahmos and how have
a more liberal view of religion.
Paresh Babu A Saint-like Figure:-
Tagore has creates the character of
Paresh Babu keeping in mind the personality of is own father. His father
Devendranath was called ‘Maharshi’. He was a saint-like man. Paresh Babu is
also saint-like. He is the representative of all the best qualities of Brahmo
Samaj. His saintliness is also of a high order. Binoy is highly impressed by
his saintliness during his casual meeting in the street with him. During Gora’s
first meeting with him, he impresses him wit his refinement, highest culture,
wisdom and saintliness. To gar all Brahmo Samjis were the enemies of Hinduism.
But Gora realizes that Paresh Babu’s case was quite different.
His serious and Calm nature:-
The very first impression that Paresh
Babu leaves on the reader’s minds is of his serious and clam nature. He is
never shaken in any circumstances. We know about his calm nature, when the
accident takes place in the very beginning of the novel. He is hurt more than
Sucharita, but remains at ease A drink of warm mike was enough to restore his
so he refused t drink brandy. It shows his desire live a pure and simple life.
Due to his love for peaceful and call atmosphere he stays in Calcutta instead
of joining Baroda and daughters for the
party Mr. Brownlow’s place. Moreover he is a deeply devoted man. He has full
faith in God. He spends most his times in prayers and compellation.
His Firmness and Will-Power:-
When Baroda tells him that Sucharita is
willing to marry Haran, he replies her that he will believe it only when
Sucharita will tell him the same .this shows his firmness even when Haran tries
to persuade home to face Sucharita for the marriage. He flatly refuses to do
so. He is not afraid even when Haran tries to threaten him. Haran asks an advantage
of Lolita’s journey to Calcutta in the complain of Binoy and makes a scandal
out of it but Paresh Babu remains silent. He faces it calmly.
His Love for Lolita:-
His love for Lolita and his confidence in her are
shown in the decision to allow the marriage of Binoy and Lolita in the face of
the while Brahmo community as he thinks it to be right. He tries to do his good
Brahmo in trying to persuade Binoy to be a Brahmo, but late he finds that both
of them are ready to fight any difficulties, so he gives his permission.. Thus
Paresh Babu always thinks reasonably.
As Broadminded Father:-
He is a broadminded father. He knows
that Baroda would not allow Lolita’ marriage in her own house. He also knows
that Lolita would find the atmosphere in the house hot and unpleasant. So he
thinks that it would be better to shift Lolita and keep her under the care of Andandmoyi.:-
Gora’s Tribute to him:-
Gora pays the best tribute to the
wisdom, broadmindedness and idealism of Paresh Babu. At the end of the novel
when Gora comes to now that he is not a Hindu, at once he goes to Paresh Babu.
Gora says that it is you, who have the mantram of that freedom. Make me your disciple.
Give me the mantram of that Gold who belongs to everybody, Hindu, Mohammedan,
Christian and Brahmo a like
Conclusion:-
Hence idealism and temperament, Paresh
Babu and Andandmoyi resemble. Of course, she does not have philosophical and saintly
Paresh Babu. She is the representative the best in Hinduism just as Pare Babu presents
the best in the Brahmo Sect.
